These black velvet spider web cupcakes are a spooky yet cozy Halloween treat. The deep, rich flavor of the black velvet cake is perfectly balanced by a creamy, sweet cream cheese frosting, and the spider web design is surprisingly easy to pull off.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) black cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • ½ cup (120ml) hot brewed coffee
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz (226g) cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Black gel food coloring (optional)
  • ½ cup (about 100g) white candy melts
  • Small piping bag or Ziplock bag
  • Optional: edible glitter or sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix with a spatula until just combined (batter will be thick).
  5. Slowly pour in hot coffee while gently stirring until batter is smooth and glossy.
  6. Divide batter evenly among the 12 liners, filling each about ⅔ to ¾ full.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Let cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat softened butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, on low speed. Add vanilla and 2 tablespoons heavy cream. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy. Add more cream if needed. Add black gel food coloring if desired.
  11. For the spider web: Melt white candy melts in a small microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Transfer to a small piping bag or Ziplock bag and snip off a tiny corner.
  12. Fit a large piping bag with a star tip and fill with cream cheese frosting. Pipe a generous swirl onto each cooled cupcake.
  13. Working with one cupcake at a time, pipe three concentric circles of white candy on top of the frosting. Use a toothpick to drag lines from the center outward, pulling through the circles to create a web effect. Wipe toothpick clean between each line.
  14. Let spider webs set for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients are key for best texture. Don’t overmix the batter. The hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without making the cupcakes taste like coffee. For cleaner spider web lines, chill frosted cupcakes for 10 minutes before piping the white chocolate. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Unfrosted cupcakes can be frozen for up to 3 months.
