Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (can swap with almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (full-fat preferred)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or non-stick spray and lightly dust with flour.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until mostly smooth with some lumps.
  3. Add canned pumpkin, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the bananas. Whisk or stir until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  5. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet banana pumpkin mixture using a rubber spatula. Fold gently about 20-30 times until no flour streaks remain.
  6. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes using a hand or stand mixer.
  7. Pour half of the banana pumpkin batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth it out.
  8. Spoon dollops of the cream cheese mixture evenly over the batter.
  9. Spread the remaining banana batter over the cream cheese layer.
  10. Use a butter knife or skewer to swirl the batter and cream cheese together in a figure-eight or zigzag pattern, creating marbling without overmixing.
  11. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, checking for doneness at 50 minutes with a toothpick. If the top browns too fast, tent with foil after 40 minutes.
  12. Cool the bread in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Use fully softened cream cheese for a smooth swirl. Do not overmix the batter to keep the bread tender. Tent with foil if the top browns too quickly. Ripe bananas with brown spots provide the best sweetness. Variations include gluten-free flour, dairy-free cream cheese, nuts, chocolate chips, or seasonal vegetable swaps.
