A soft sugar cookie recipe passed down through generations, delivering a tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a buttery, sweet flavor perfect for tea time or anytime comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3½ cups (440 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Extra granulated sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened unsalted butter with granulated sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed for 3-5 minutes until light, fluffy, and pale yellow.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time until fully incorporated, then add vanilla extract and mix until smooth. Avoid overmixing.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Sift if desired.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Scoop dough by rounded tablespoons and roll into balls. Roll each ball in extra granulated sugar and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are set and just starting to turn golden. Centers may look slightly underbaked.
  8. Let cookies rest on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

If dough is too sticky to roll, chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Avoid overbaking to keep cookies soft. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1-to-1 gluten-free blend. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and coconut yogurt instead of eggs. Cookies continue to cook slightly as they cool.
