A comforting fall drink made with dry red wine, crisp apples, cinnamon, and caramel bits. This easy-to-make sangria steeps overnight for deep flavor and is perfect for autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750 ml dry red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot)
  • 2 large apples (Honeycrisp and Granny Smith mix), cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 23 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 1/4 cup caramel bits or 23 tablespoons caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup soda water
  • Ice cubes for serving

Instructions

  1. Wash apples and cut them into small, bite-sized cubes. Place the apple cubes into a large glass pitcher.
  2. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves to the pitcher with the apples.
  3. Pour the red wine over the fruit and spices, ensuring the fruit is mostly submerged.
  4. Drizzle caramel sauce or sprinkle caramel bits into the pitcher. Stir gently to distribute sweetness.
  5. Pour in the orange juice and stir again to combine.
  6. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Just before serving, add soda water and stir gently.
  8. Serve over ice in wide-mouth glasses, garnished with an apple slice or cinnamon stick.

Notes

Do not add soda water until just before serving to maintain carbonation. The sangria improves in flavor after sitting overnight. Avoid using wine with over 14% alcohol to prevent bitterness. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute wine with strong black tea or non-alcoholic red wine blend.
